About Roger's Photography

A look into Roger’s journey and passion for photography.

Hi, I’m Roger Spurgeon. Let me share a bit about myself and my journey in photography. I was born and raised right here in Ottumwa. In 1980, I joined the United States Marine Corps and served for four years before coming back home. After that, I spent five years at Musco Lighting, working on lighting for movies and college football games. In 1992, I moved to California to work with BeBee Night Lights, again focusing on lighting for major films and TV shows. I retired in 2023 and returned to Ottumwa.

My passion for photography started back in Okinawa, Japan, when I bought my first film camera while serving in the Marines. Since then, I’ve always had a quality camera by my side. In 1995, I worked part-time at the Perris Valley Skydiving School in California as a freefall cameraman and videographer. I captured photos and videos of students on their first jumps and worked with experienced skydivers jumping from planes, balloons, and even walking on the wing of a glider. Over four years, I logged more than 1,500 camera jumps — some of the best memories of my life.

Since then, I’ve kept growing my photography skills and lighting expertise. Today, I’m the official photographer for the Bridge View Center, covering their special events and concerts. I use natural light and multiple flashes to make sure every shot has the perfect mood and lighting.

I enjoy capturing those special moments for people — whether it’s maternity, newborns, kids, seniors, family portraits, sports events, pets, corporate headshots, or even drone photos of your farm or business.
